How many different ways are there to really profit from the web?

A very broad question which actually deserves a targeted answer.

One of the biggest concerns I have about people who ask this question is that they intend to diversify their efforts over many different strategies all at once. The end result is that they typically find themselves in a dizzying array of web projects, affiliate marketing plans, joint ventures and the like and at the end of the day, they’ve got too much to manage.

The widely abused concept of a “niche” is truly the ticket to making money. If you can find an unexploited or under served niche - you are on the cusp of something that may become wildly profitable, if you can manage to develop it.

Patience is key, no matter how frustrating it can be to hear that.

If you want to buy a site that already makes money, check out Sitepoint or DigitalPoint. Their forums constantly have webmasters looking to sell their web properties so that they can move on to bigger projects.

The general list of ways to make money should look something like this:

  • Affiliate marketing (through)
  • “Bum” marketing
  • Promoting your offline services to online consumers (legal, accounting work, etc.)
  • Creating and Flipping Websites
  • Buying websites, developing/marketing them for increased revenue (turnkey sites)
  • GPT/Incentive Websites
  • Blog writing (and selling advertising space)
  • ???

This list could go on and on. The internet is still in its infancy and many people forget that email as we know it today, was a very new concept in the mid 1990’s!

I focus primarily on internet/affiliate marketing and investing in web properties.

Care to share what I’m missing from this list?
